Authorities in northern Minnesota are investigating a tragic domestic-related incident that left two people dead early Friday morning at a residence west of International Falls, Minnesota. Officials say the case is being treated as an apparent murder-suicide involving an estranged couple.
According to the Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office, the situation unfolded around 4:40 a.m. when a deputy on routine patrol noticed a vehicle running in the driveway of a home located on the 4100 block of Highway 11. The deputy recognized that the vehicle was connected to an active protection order involving the owner of the vehicle and the person who lived at the residence.

Concerned by the circumstances, the deputy attempted to make contact with anyone inside the home. After repeated attempts went unanswered, deputies—along with an officer from the International Falls Police Department—forced entry into the residence to check on the occupants.
Inside the home, officers discovered two individuals who had died from gunshot wounds. Authorities later identified the victims as 35-year-old Ashley E. Kittelson and 44-year-old Nicholas D. Kittelson, both residents of International Falls. Investigators say preliminary findings indicate that Ashley Kittelson died from a gunshot wound, while Nicholas Kittelson sustained what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officials described the pair as estranged spouses and said the evidence suggests the incident was a domestic-related murder-suicide. Law enforcement agencies believe the event was isolated and have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation, while the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies to determine the exact causes and circumstances of death.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the small northern Minnesota community, where news of the incident spread quickly among residents. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to fully understand the events leading up to the deadly encounter.
